Movies That Aged Terribly

'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective'

Jim Carrey is known for being the funny guy in almost every film he makes, but Ace Ventura: Pet Detective isn't funny now. While the film still holds up in some aspects, the blatant transphobia is a lot to handle, and in the current LGBTQ-positive climate the 2020s are trying to withhold, this film just isn't it! Sorry, Jim Carrey, we still love you though!

'Never Been Kissed'

Okay watching Never Been Kissed when you were young with all your girlfriends is a fond memory, we'll admit it! But the fact Drew Barrymore's character "Josie" is supposed to be an adult pretending to be a high school student, and her teacher falls in love with her not knowing she's actually of age? Kinda creepy, no?

'American Beauty'

While the film American Beauty was widely adored and remains a cult classic, there's no denying there's something a bit yucky of the premise following Kevin Spacey's #MeToo allegations. The whole idea of the film was supposed to be a commentary on the sexualization and fetishization of young women, so the film itself isn't gross - just the fact Spacey's character follows a little too close to the real-life allegations makes it hard to watch now!

'I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry'

It's not totally surprising that Adam Sandler is on this list, considering most of his films are laced with inappropriate jokes, but this film I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry is just far too homophobic for the modern-day film critic. The harmful stereotypes make it hard to get through now that people are more educated on the issues members of the LGBTQ members face.

'Revenge of the Nerds'

Yikes, where do we start with Revenge of the Nerds? When it was initially released in the '80s, folks were pleased to see that nerds were finally in the spotlight as something other than a brunt of a joke, but the more one looked into the film, the more disturbing it got! The film featured a nonconsensual sex scene, and not in a Game of Thrones you understood it kinda way, but a way that was hidden under the guise of a joke... yeah, we're not laughing either.

'She's All That'

It's painful to see the classic teen-bop film She's All That on this list, but alas it must be done! The film isn't innately terrible like some other films on the list, but what makes this film tiresome is the misogynistic trope it followed. The film inadvertently teaches girls that you too could find a hottie with a body if you only change literally everything about yourself. As long as you change your appearance, and reinvent yourself to fit into a man's box, you're set!

'Chasing Amy'

No, Ben Affleck, not even you can make a lesbian turn straight, because that is literally impossible. In the 90s, critically adored film Chasing Amy features a hopeful young Affleck following around a hot blonde who from the beginning assured him she's not swinging on the same team. He blatantly ignores that fact, continues to try and date her, and just hasn't grasped the fact that no means no, not maybe.

'Breakfast at Tiffany's'

Sorry classic film lovers, this one's another tough pill to swallow! Breakfast at Tiffany's is a solid film, if you ignore the blatant racism, that is. Not only was the only Asian character a terrible stereotype that was super inappropriate, but it was also played by the white Mickey Rooney, which is just so cringy it's hard to watch any scene with him in it.

'Gone With the Wind'

Okay, so maybe it's not a huge shocker that a film made in 1939 about a war that was about slavery would be racist, but somehow Gone With The Wind is still widely acclaimed. The film not only completely romanticizes a war based on the oppression and complete genocide of an entire race of people, but does so in a way that also somehow manages to make the South look like the good guys. In case you need a history refresher, the Confederates wanted to keep slavery, so the whole premise of the film is a bit gross, especially now in a very prevalent and growing Black Lives Matter era.

'Sixteen Candles'

Another cult classic and 80s beloved film Sixteen Candles isn't as good as you might remember. Not only was there a ton of racism in the film, but yet again we see a scene in which nonconsensual sex was thought to be a good joke. Thank God times have changed, #MeToo was a much-needed movement!

While some movies stand the test of time, there are some out there that just don't hit the mark like they once did! Whether it be outdated ideologies, jokes that just don't fly anymore, or actors ruining their reputation, one thing's for sure - these movies aged terribly!

Movies That Aged Terribly

Although your nan may look back at some films with fondness, watching them again in the 21st century might be a mistake for ol' nan. The Audrey Hepburn classic Breakfast at Tiffany's is hard to look at as anything other than fantastic, but now it's incentive racial stereotypes just don't pass the vibe check!
