- 'Little House on the Prairie' remains iconic
- Why did "Beth" have that nickname?
- The reason is rooted in real circumstances
Why does "Almonzo" call "Laura Ingalls" by the name "Beth"?
As most viewers know, "Laura" and her family really existed. The protagonist lived under the name Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder in the 19th and 20th centuries.
If you look closely at the name, you can easily guess where the nickname "Beth" comes from: it is a shortened form of Elizabeth. While "Almanzo" in the series called his wife "Beth", the real Almanzo called her Bess, a common abbreviation of Elizabeth at the time.
The nickname was slightly changed for the series. There is a good reason why Almanzo did not call Laura by her first name. Almonzo had a sister who was also called Laura. There was probably a risk of confusion.
