Law & Order: SVU season 22 premiered this week. And, as ET reports, the new season will cover in detail the most formative events of 2020. As you might expect, the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement will play a major role in the show's investigations.
Law & Order: SVU season 22: Final preview
Law & Order: SVU is famous for incorporating current events into stories on the series, often described as a "ripped-from-the-headlines" style. For example, #MeToo was a recent subject in the series now led by "Captain Olivia Benson" (Mariska Hargitay).
Fittingly, the new SVU season will tackle crimes related to the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement in various episodes. Speaking to ET ahead of the premiere, showrunner Warren Leight said: "All of what the city has gone through will be reflected in what our characters go through. Their actions as police officers will be viewed through a different prism than before."
Ice-T's comments on SVU's new season
So, in season 22, fans can expect relevant stories that reflect 2020, a year like no other. Ahead of the Nov. 12 premiere, SVU star Ice-T also said: "The show comes right in on, you know, racism, it's coming in on police brutality, it's shot in the midst of COVID.
"So you're going to see a lot, a lot of issues that we've been dealing with over the past six months tackled directly by Law & Order: SVU because they choose to, and the writers are writing incredible spirit based on a lot of these issues," the actor revealed.
Season 22 premiered on NBC on Nov. 12, when viewers got a first-hand look at just how directly SVU will pull from the headlines of 2020. As usual, worldwide viewers will have to wait a little longer, for a yet-undetermined premiere date.
In a previous update, the SVU showrunner also revealed that the season 21 finale and the "Sir Tobias Moore" (Ian McShane) case won't pick up immediately in the new season.
