Kristen Stewart has officially stepped into the role of Princess Diana! As Entertainment Tonight reports, the first photo of Stewart in the upcoming biopic Spencer was released on Wednesday, and it sees her channeling one of the Princess of Wales' iconic looks!
Spencer to be both filmed and released in 2021
Stewart was cast as Princess Diana in Spencer last year, calling the project an "internal imagining" of a tumultuous time in the late royal's life. As Entertainment Tonight shares, the film's distributor NEON revealed that principal photography has officially begun, and Spencer is slated to shoot in both Germany and the United Kingdom before being released next year!
"Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life," Stewart explained in a new press release for the film, which is set during December 1991. "It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her."
Stewart channels Princess Diana's veiled hat 1986 look
Stewart has previously talked about the challenge of taking on such an iconic role, sharing that she had been reading up on Princess Diana and working with a dialect coach in order to prepare! And while we haven't heard her British accent yet, the first photo of her channeling the Princess of Wales shows she can certainly dress the part.
As Entertainment Tonight mentions, Stewart's ensemble in the newly released image recalls an outfit that was worn by Princess Diana in 1986 during her visit to a hospital in Sheffield, England. Sporting Diana's iconic blonde bob, as well as a veiled hat and red blazer, the actress strongly resembles the late royal!
"The Prince and Princess of Wales' marriage has long since grown cold. Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate," the official synopsis for Spencer reads. "There's eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different."
