Jerry Springer may have ended in 2018, but the man himself Jerry Springer is still providing daily entertainment on television today. Now 77 years old, Springer has transitioned from hosting his conflict-heavy tabloid show to something a little more orderly: Judge Jerry.

Judge Jerry debuted in late 2019 and, as the title suggests, it features Springer as a courtroom judge, perhaps in the tradition of Judy Judy. It's already aired over 100 episodes in a little over a year and it's currently showing season 2 in the 2020-21 TV season.

Springer had actually said he planned to retire after concluding his talk show, but he changed his mind after Judge Jerry came around. "I love doing [Judge Jerry] because it's the first grownup job I've had in 30 years," Springer said in 2019. "I have to do research and I have to remember what I learned in law school and practicing law. I really do my homework."

Is Jerry Springer a real judge?

As Springer referenced, he truly did attend law school, earning a J.D. degree from Northwestern University in 1968. He was also a partner in a law firm from 1973 to 1985, but he had to take a course to become a judge, according to WFTV.

So Judge Jerry isn't an act — Springer has a background in law and is now qualified to be a real judge. The cases he handles are civil rather than criminal ones, but they still carry legal validity. Season 2 of Judge Jerry, shot amid the pandemic, has also come with new precautions, including separate filming locations for Springer and the defendants and plaintiffs.

Springer also informed WFTV that he wanted to bring "more comedy and light-hearted moments" this season and that his former retirement plans have been "shelved" due to his enjoyment of the show.

So, fans who keep up with Jerry Springer's work appear to have plenty more to look forward to in coming years.
