HBO Announces 'Game of Thrones' Prequel Air Date and 'Friends' Reunion Details

HBO has now confirmed that they are in pre-production for the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, but fans should not expect to see it any time soon. Get all the details here!

The highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon will likely not air until 2022, as HBO's chief of programming Casey Bloys confirmed on Wednesday.

Bloys spoke to Variety at the Television Critics Association's winter tour and said that the team behind it "are in the room breaking story right now. My guess is we'll see it on the air in '22."

Although that is quite a wait for all GoT fans, many of them sure will be glad that House of the Dragon is moving forward after HBO had previously decided to axe another prequel starring Naomi Watts.

"That [prequel] was 8,000 years before the current show, so it required a lot more invention," Bloys told Variety. "One of the benefits of House of the Dragon is there was a text from [Game of Thrones] author George [R.R. Martin] and there was a little bit more of a roadmap. [The other prequel] did have more challenges in terms of establishing a world…"

Not much else is known yet about the new show based on George R.R. Martin's most recent book, but there was a little update on the Friends reunion special supposedly coming to the new streaming service HBO Max, which will launch in May 2020.

Friends reunion on HBO Max "still a maybe"

HBO Max' chief content officer Kevin Reilly was asked about the status of a potential Friends reunion special, but did not have any big news for all fans of the show.

"There's interest all the way around, and yet we can't seem to quite get that interest aligned to push the button on it," Reilly said. "Today, unfortunately, it's still a maybe."
