Grey's Anatomy's midseason premiere ended with a tragic loss, and this week's episode sees the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial dealing with the fallout. Season 17, episode 8— titled "It's All Too Much"— tackles the aftermath of "DeLuca's" death, showing what grieving looks like amidst the pandemic.
Grey's Anatomy sees "Bailey" struggle with "DeLuca's" death
Grey's Anatomy continues to reflect the realities of the pandemic, as the characters discuss having a service instead of an actual funeral for "DeLuca". "Bailey" asks for "DeLuca's" autopsy results, and when "Richard" questions her why, she explains that the was "one of our own."
Even after getting the report that "DeLuca" died from coagulapathy, "Bailey" finds it hard to cope with his death. When she talks about sitting the doctors down to see if someone messed up during the operation, "Richard" becomes angry and tells her to just let them grieve.
Grey's Anatomy tackles issues of grief and mortality
Grey's Anatomy also saw "Nico" and "Levi" sitting outside together, having a heart-to-heart about the emotions they're experiencing after "DeLuca's" death. While "Levi" says that "grief" is his go-to feeling, "Nico" shares that he's currently "numb".
"Levi" shows his support to "Bailey" later on, talking about how his Jewish faith helps him when it comes to the grieving process. He acknowledges how "Bailey" already lost her mother, and reminds her that there are others also experiencing grief over "DeLuca" who need her.
"Jo" shares that she's quitting the department of surgery, hoping to find happiness in the OB/GYN department. She, "Link," and "Jackson" play a drinking game to see who has the saddest stories to share— which quickly ends up getting depressing.
Grey's Anatomy reunites Meredith and Derek on the beach
Grey's Anatomy also sees "Meredith" return to her beach hallucination, as she reunites with "Derek" again after she sees him fishing. "Derek" talks to "Meredith" about their daughters— even though he never got to meet "Ellis"— saying that "Zola" writes him letters in her journal.
Meanwhile, "Hayes" makes a moving speech to "Meredith," telling her she needs to "fight". However, "Meredith" struggles with the idea of leaving the idyllic beach for her reality. While her vitals remain stable for the time being, it's been revealed that she will be visited by another fan-favourite character next week!
In the last few minutes of the episode, the staff of Grey Sloan Memorial gather outside for "DeLuca's" memorial, seeking comfort in one another while paying tribute to his life. "DeLuca" himself even makes an appearance, as the video he sent in to apply to work at the hospital is shown during the emotional scene!
