Grey's Anatomy is officially returning for another season! On Monday, it was announced by ABC that the hit medical drama will continue to be part of their lineup for another year, despite earlier rumours of the show ending after season 17.
Grey's Anatomy star Pompeo confirmed to return as "Meredith"
Grey's Anatomy fans will be relieved to hear that star Ellen Pompeo is coming back to play "Meredith Grey" once again! Pompeo has been with the show since the very first episode, and is an integral part of the series. As Variety shares, her contract has now been renewed for season 18— but could possibly extend even further if the show were to keep going.
The outlet has also revealed that Chandra Wilson's "Miranda Bailey" and James Pickens Jr.'s "Richard Webber" will both be back at Grey Sloan Memorial alongside Pompeo's "Meredith"! However, one actor who won't be joining them next season is Jesse Williams, who plays "Jackson Avery". Williams confirmed his exit shortly after last week's episode aired, which saw "Jackson" preparing to begin a new role.
Grey's Anatomy spinoff Station 19 renewed for season 5
Grey's Anatomy viewers were wondering if season 17 could possibly be the end of the hit show prior to the renewal announcement. Not only have many fan favourite characters made surprise returns, but back in March, showrunner Krista Vernoff mentioned that she was preparing for a possible series finale. Pompeo has also revealed what her hope for the series' eventual ending is.
Over the last few seasons, Grey's Anatomy has frequently had crossover episodes with Station 19. Luckily for fans of both, ABC announced that the spinoff— which follows a team of Seattle firefighters— has also been renewed, getting a fifth season. As Variety mentions, Grey's and Station 19 are the network's most-watched scripted series. It looks like Thursday nights will continue to be filled with all the drama and excitement of Shondaland for the foreseeable future!
