Fawlty Towers Has Episode Removed From UK Streaming Service
The hilarious 1970s sitcom Fawlty Towers has an episode under review for its use of the N-word, and UKTV has announced it has temporarily removed the episode from its library.
In the episode entitled "The Germans" a character repeatedly uses offensive language much to the discomfort of the other characters. Previously, in 2013 the scenes containing the offensive language had been edited out of repeat showing after creator and star John Cleese consulted his representatives.
Now a UKTV spokesperson has stated "The episode contains racial slurs so we are taking the episode down while we review it. We regularly review older content to ensure it meets audience expectations and are particularly aware of the impact of outdated language."
Many shows and films are being removed for similar reasons like HBO Max's Gone With the Wind. In the past, older shows and films have been rereleased with notes on the context of time and the gravity of the language on-screen or with the slurs censored. We will have to wait and see what UKTV decides to do with the rogue episode of Fawlty Towers.
