2020 hit pause on many entertainment world projects – but Dune was not among them.
On Wednesday, the upcoming sci-fi epic dropped a first official trailer. The movie unites rising star Timothée Chalamet with Zendaya and Jason Momoa in an adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic 1965 novel Dune. Popular director Denis Villeneuve helms the project, which will be released on Dec. 18, 2020.
Dune movie: Watch the trailer
In the 3-minute trailer, Chalamet is seen taking on the role of "Paul Atreides," with appearances by Zendaya, Momoa, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, and Dave Bautista.
Warner Bros. describes the plot as follows: "A mythic and emotionally charged hero's journey, 'Dune' tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people."
Dune (2020) cast: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and more
The ensemble cast of Dune features young stars such as Chalamet and Zendaya, as well as veteran actors including Isaac, Momoa, Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgård, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem.
It's also Canadian director Denis Villeneuve's first film since Blade Runner 2049. He's been behind the camera on other acclaimed titles such as Arrival, Prisoners, and Incendies.
Dune, meanwhile, receives a new adaptation, after David Lynch last brought it to the big screen in 1984. The director, who famously denounced the film after disputes over creative control, said he has "zero interest" in the 2020 film due to the lasting "heartache" of his movie.
Watch Dune—part one of two films—when it comes out on Dec. 18! Science fiction fans, Chalamet's and Zendaya's fanbases, and fans of good filmmaking all have high expectations for this one.
