'Barbie' is still dominating the box office

Barbie' surpassed $575.4 million at the North American box office on Aug. 23, 'CNBC' reports. That means it is now the highest-grossing domestic movie of the year.

Previously, 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' held the title by raking in $574 million. Meanwhile, 'Barbie' is also on track to surpass 'Mario' as the highest-grossing global release of 2023. 'Mario' has brought in $1.35 billion worldwide, and 'Barbie' is close behind with $1.3 billion.

They are the only two movies to exceed $1 billion this year. 'Barbie' held the top box office spot for four consecutive weekends before being knocked down by 'Blue Beetle,' another Warner Bros. release.
