Now, the word is that the 67 year old Reubens wants to reimagine the tone of "Pee-Wee's" on-screen treatment.

What does Reubens have in mind for "Pee-Wee" now?
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paul Reubens expressed interest in a dark reboot for his character that would involve a stay in a mental hospital, shock treatment, and alcohol addiction. This would be a rather stark departure from "Pee-Wee's" usual colourful and comedic adventures.

The Safdie brothers could direct the film
The iconic "Pee-Wee" character is still appreciated by many fans. Reportedly, the Safdie brothers are among them. Reubens pitched the film to Josh and Benny Safdie, who, as a duo, are rapidly rising star indie filmmakers.
The Safdies have earned acclaim with recent films including Good Time, starring Robert Pattinson, and Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler in a dramatic role. The brothers are "considering the project," according to THR.
More "Pee-Wee" to come?
Fans of "Pee-Wee Herman" will hope that this project comes to fruition! Reubens believes that he still has the magic to create another Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, even if the film's story would test uncharted waters for "Pee-Wee."
