'The Irishman': This Is What Robert De Niro Looked Like Back In The Day
The Irishman tells the real-life story of Frank Sheeran, a truck driver who becomes involved as a hitman for a crime family. Robert De Niro stars as "Sheeran," while Joe Pesci plays mob boss "Russell Bufalino." Veteran director Martin Scorsese directed the 209-minute epic film, which was distributed by Netflix in 2019.
The Irishman also covers how Sheeran's life crossed paths with Jimmy Hoffa, who is portrayed by Al Pacino in the film.
The film has received many nominations at awards shows including the BAFTAs and Golden Globes. But so far it's only major win was for Best Acting Ensemble at the Critics' Choice Awards.
The Irishman heads into the 2020 Oscars with an impressive 10 nominations, as it looks to compete in categories including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor.

What you need to know about The Irishman
The film is based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses, which is about the life of the film's lead figure, Frank Sheeran.
The Irishman brought Scorsese, De Niro, and Pesci back together for the first time since Casino in 1995. It was Scorsese's ninth collaboration with De Niro, who had earlier starred in his Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Mean Streets. It was also the director's first film to feature Al Pacino.

Joe Pesci actually came out of retirement to appear as "Russell Bufalino" in the film. Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, and Harvey Keitel round out the film's supporting cast.
The Irishman was also notable for its use of digital de-aging special effects. They were used to allow De Niro to portray moments in Sheeran's life from the 1950s until around the year 2000.

The film is nominated 10 times (in 9 categories) at the 92nd Academy Awards this Sunday, February 9. De Niro missed out on a Best Actor nomination, but Pesci and Pacino will both compete in the Supporting Actor category.
The Irishman is also a contender for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It additionally received nominations in five technical categories.
With few wins at earlier shows this awards season, The Irishman is an underdog nominee at the 2020 Oscars. But it is the team of Scorsese, De Niro, Pesci, and Pacino once again doing what they do best - epic crime films. Critics especially praised Scorsese's directing, Pacino's performance, and the film's introspective themes.
