Princess Diana was known to most as a cheerful, kind, and young woman who changed many Royal traditions for the better, had two children, Prince William and Prince Harry, and even defied some of the Royal procedures when she took her sons out on trips.
Why Lady Diana was the ideal pick
It is also common knowledge that the Queen was not particularly fond of Diana, nor were the rest of the Royals, and her marriage was a disaster from the very start since Charles always wished to marry Camilla instead.
So it begs the question, why did the Royal family choose Diana in the first place? It all comes down to a series of requirements that the family was looking for and Diana just seemed to fit the role perfectly in paper.
Charles was 30 years old, had had many girlfriends, and was fixed on Camilla, who was not ideal by Royal standards. Since Charles was aging quickly, the Royal family was anxious to find a suitable wife as soon as possible. Queue Lady Diana. Wendy Holden, author of the book ‘The Princess’, a novel based on Diana’s story, told ‘People’, “She needed to be young, she needed to be aristocratic, and she needed to be without a past. It was a very pragmatic decision. She was practically the only person who was left. He had had so many girlfriends by then.”

However, from an object point of view, Diana was simply a smart play to keep Charles in a good position in the public’s eye — Diana was named the “People’s Princess” after all. Most likely the Royal family did not imagine or intend that things would evolve the way they did, causing Diana to feel miserable until their divorce, yet somehow it did happen and who was most affected by the whole situation was Diana.
Holden adds, “From her point of view it was love — she thought he was going to sweep her away and be a knight on a white charger, everything she always wanted. I hadn’t appreciated the extent to which what we saw the day before the wedding wasn’t just a little bit different from the reality but the actual complete reverse.”
