King Edward abdicated in 1936 shortly after becoming monarch. He wanted to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson. After him, King George VI took over. In 1952, he died of an arterial thrombosis; he was only 56 years old. His daughter Elizabeth automatically became queen upon his death.

The family is steeped in bad times

Louis Mountbatten, Prince Philip's uncle, died in an attack. The IRA detonated a bomb on his boat. In 1992, there was a fire at Windsor Castle. A curtain was ignited by a defective lamp and over 100 rooms were affected.
