- Prince George turned eleven
- His birthday picture was black & white
- This is the meaning behind it
A new photo of Prince George, taken by his mother Princess Kate (42), was published to mark his eleventh birthday. The black-and-white picture, shared on the Wales family's social media channels on July 22, 2024, shows the young prince in an open white shirt and dark blazer as he sits on a bench, smiling at the camera. He wears a friendship bracelet on his left wrist, adding a personal touch to the picture.
Prince George: THIS is why the picture is black and white
Many fans have wondered why the picture was in black and white rather than color. Former royal photographer Ian Pelham-Turner told the British newspaper Express that black-and-white photography is Kate's preferred choice, as it is seen as trendy and stylish.
Also interesting:
"The reality is she likes creating imagery that is - with black and white it's a lot starker. It's a much more focused image." explains Ian. "Sometimes colour can take away from the distant aspects of the shot. With black and white it's something that is symbolic of showing the royal family. Just a straight image of them without any distraction of colour."
Princess Kate's passion for photography
Princess Kate, who trained in photography at Kensington and Chelsea Art College, has a longstanding tradition of capturing royal family moments. Ian Pelham-Turner notes that by using black-and-white photography, Kate continues the tradition of previous royal photographers, creating nostalgic and symbolic images that keep the royal family prominent in the public eye.
More about Prince George:
"She obviously loves taking photographs—it's one of her biggest hobbies. She's a good photographer and has created some very interesting images in the past," Ian adds. The choice of black-and-white photography reflects the nostalgia and style Kate aims to capture. "The black and white photograph has a look of the former queen on the image as well so again it might be nostalgia why it's done in black and white at the same time."
Last year, Prince George’s tenth birthday was marked with a previously unpublished color photo by photographer Millie Pilkington. Ian, who has photographed Prince George’s father, William, and his uncle Harry since their births, emphasizes that black-and-white photography has always been a favored style within the royal family.
