- King Charles III took the throne in September 2022
- Charles is starting his reign at a fairly old age
- He actually set THIS record when he became King
The reign of King Charles III officially began on Sept. 8, 2022, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
So ended a record-setting 70-year period with Charles as heir to the British throne. But the new King actually established another record when he finally became monarch...
Charles III made history as King – with his age
At the age of 73, King Charles III became the oldest ascending monarch in the history of the UK. And it wasn't particularly close!
The previous mark was set by King William IV, who was 64 years old when he ascended the throne in 1830.
Also interesting:
King Charles, however, had nine years on King William, so the record is his. And he's pretty high up the list of oldest sitting monarchs, too...
From his first day, Charles was already the sixth oldest British monarch at any time in their reign. His mother, the late Queen, tops that category at 96 years of age.
But as the saying goes: Age is just a number. Charles had been preparing his whole life for this time, and it's finally here.
