Royal Family Sends Messages Of Support To British Olympians

As their nation's athletes take to the world stage for this year's Olympic Games, the royals are expressing their support! "Wishing #TeamGB every success at the #Tokyo2020 #olympics," the official Twitter account for the Royal Family said in a message on Friday. They also included a quote from one of their own who has a special connection to the Olympics.

Princess Anne has the unique honour of being the president of Team Great Britain. It makes sense then that the Royal Family's social media message included an excerpt from Anne's recent speech to the team ahead of the Games! "'I and the whole nation will be cheering you on and proudly supporting you from home,'" they concluded, citing the royal as the quote's source.

What royal fans may not know is that Princess Anne isn't just a representative of Team Great Britain— she is also an Olympian herself! Anne took part in the 1976 Summer Olympics which were held in Montreal, competing in the Games' equestrian event. She borrowed the queen's horse, Goodwill, for the multi-day challenge. 

Prince William and Duchess Kate also took to Twitter on Friday to show their support for those competing on behalf of Great Britain! They shared an encouraging message that briefly touched upon the world's current circumstances. "Wishing all the athletes and staff @TeamGB the best of luck this #Tokyo2020 #Olympics," the couple wrote. "Although it won’t be like previous Games, enjoy it and we know you’ll do the nation proud."

Since this year's Olympics are taking place in Tokyo, Japan, the royal family has been unable to attend. However, Kate and William's message reflects their continued support for Great Britain's athletes! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge recently showed up to cheer on one of the nation's sporting teams during an event much closer to home, attending a Euro 2020 match along with their oldest son, Prince George.
