ROYAL NEWS: Queen Elizabeth II steps out for her second engagement of the year!

Queen Elizabeth II is the longest-reigning British monarch

The bells of Westminster Abbey (where the Queen was crowned and also married) will ring out to mark the Accession day as well. Elizabeth is the longest-reigning British monarch with 68 years under her belt. The second longest is Queen Victoria (1837-1901) at 63 years and 216 days, followed by King George III (1760-1820) at 59 years and 96 days.

The 93-year-old monarch ascended the thrown on February 6th, 1952 after her father, King George VI passed away. She was just 25 years old at the time. Elizabeth has been married to Prince Philip during her entire reign thus far and has lived to see 8 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren so far. She has been an incredible asset to the British monarchy in continuing the evolution of the Commonwealth.

The Queen will celebrate privately

The Queen will celebrate this milestone privately at her home in Sandringham, where she has spent most of her winter break. She did step out for a little engagement on Wednesday to unveil a plaque to commemorate her visit to the Norfolk pumping station, which her father originally opened 72 years ago. In two years, it is expected that she will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee, which marks 70 years on the throne.
