This topic is extremely personal for Princess Victoria. A documentary about King Carl Gustaf is coming out in Sweden.

For the occasion of his 50th anniversary on the throne, the film Kungen (in English, King) will give insight into his work and the life of the Royal Family.

It features several interviews with the royals, including an emotional conversation with Princess Victoria, in which she even tears up.

Princess Victoria: The sad fact about ascending the throne

The film's director Karin af Klintberg explained to Expressen. She spoke with Victoria about the succession to the throne and, consequently, the death of her parents.

"Both she and I sat there with tears in our eyes," the director said. "It is never easy to think about the death of one’s parents and you don't want to. It is difficult to think about."

For Victoria, it's a particularly complex topic, because so much changes when her father eventually passes away.

Karin af Klintberg adds: "It is the case that [monarchs] get their office when they are in the middle of grief and a close relative has died.

"It is such an exceptionally special situation, that when you are in the middle of the mourning process you have to have the eyes of the whole world on you"...
