- Significance of Commonwealth Day
Princess Kate (43) will make an important appearance next Monday (March 10) alongside her husband Prince William (42), King Charles (76) and Queen Camilla (77). The royals will attend the annual Commonwealth Day ceremony at Westminster Abbey, according to the 'Express'.
Last year, Princess Kate had to stay away from the event as she was undergoing treatment for her cancer. King Charles was also absent last year as he paused his public duties for several months due to his cancer treatment.
Princess Kate returns
Princess Kate's return to royal duties has been gradual after taking time off last year for preventative chemotherapy. Her last public appearance was last Wednesday in South Wales, where she attended events in Pontypridd with Prince William.
The motto of this year's Commonwealth event is "Together We Thrive", which celebrates the "enduring spirit of the Commonwealth family", according to 'Express'.
King Charles' speech
King Charles, who acts as head of the Commonwealth, traditionally gives an annual address to the 56 member nations. Last year, his message was recorded on video due to his paused public appearances. This year, he will take the opportunity to emphasize the importance of unity and cooperation within the Commonwealth.
Significance of Commonwealth Day
Commonwealth Day is a celebration of the voluntary union of 56 independent nations, almost all of which were once under British rule. The event at Westminster Abbey is accompanied by a procession in which the Commonwealth Mace Bearer, three-time Paralympic champion and two-time world champion in track cycling, Kadeena Cox, plays a central role.
In addition, the Commonwealth flag will be carried by Heritage Sanmi Lawal, a member of the Commonwealth Youth Gender & Equality Network and an advocate against gender-based violence from Nigeria.
