Engagement, 1947

To kick things off, we're throwing it back to the summer of 1947. Two years after WWII, Lt. Philip Mountbatten and Princess Elizabeth, heir presumptive to the British throne, announced their engagement (pictured here). At the request of King George VI, they'd waited until after the princess turned 21 years old to make the announcement.

Royal Wedding, 1947

Four months after their engagement, Elizabeth and Philip tied the knot at Westminster Abbey. The royal wedding has hit many impressive anniversaries since, including the 50th in 1997 and even the rare platinum (70th) in 2017. Nov. 20, 2020 marks the couple's 73rd wedding anniversary.

Honeymoon, 1947

Soon after their wedding, in 1952, the young newlyweds were thrust into lives as Queen and royal consort of the UK. But they did enjoy time together before then, such as this dreamy nature shot of their 1947 honeymoon.

Family of Four, 1951

Elizabeth and Philip were already growing their family too before the princess ascended the throne. In this 1951 picture, the new parents pose happily with young Prince Charles (b. 1948) and baby Princess Anne (b. 1950).

Though the couple of over seven decades is said to have had their ups and downs behind closed doors, there's been little looking back for the British monarch and royal consort since their wedding day.

Back on Nov. 20, 1947, the Lt. Philip Mountbatten married Princess Elizabeth, heir presumptive to the UK throne, at Westminster Abbey. Just a few years later, King George VI died, beginning the reign of Queen Elizabeth II on Feb. 6, 1952.
