Prince Philip

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born on June 10, 1921 in Mon Repos, Corfu, Greece. He married Queen Elizabeth II in 1947 and together they had four children. Prince Philip

Philip was born into Greek and Danish royal families, however he joined the British Royal Navy in 1939 at 18 years old. He left active military service when Elizabeth became Queen in 1952. The military has always been incredibly important to him.

Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and Princess Margaret

Elizabeth and Philip first met in 1939 before he joined the Royal Navy. Elizabeth instantly fell in love with him and they started exchanging letters when she was just 13 years old. In the summer of 1946, Philip asked the King for Elizabeth's hand in marriage and they announced their engagement officially in July, 1947. This photo was taken that day along with Princess Margaret.

By March 1947, Philip had abandoned his Greek and Danish titles and adopted the surname Mountbatten from his mother's family. Fun Fact: Philip's great-grandson Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor also uses that name!

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip wed on November 20, 1947 in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey. It was recorded and broadcast by BBC radio to 200 million people around the world.

Prince Philip has been incredibly supportive of his wife's duties as British Monarch. He himself, took on many patronages throughout his years as senior working member of the royal family. Prince Philip retired from public engagements in 2017 after completing 22,219 solo engagements since 1952.

The Duke of Edinburgh very much enjoyed his outings, especially if they were patronages that were close to his heart. He particularly focused on areas on the environment, industry, sport and education in his some 800 organizations of which he was patron of.

The royal couple had three more children after Charles. Anne, Princess Royal was born on August 15, 1950, Prince Andrew, Duke of York was born on February 19, 1960 and finally Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex was born on March 10, 1964.
