- Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle
- She was 96 years old
- According to an expert, she may have already suspected her death
Queen Elizabeth II died in Scotland on September 8th at the age of 96. Did she know she wasn't coming back from Balmoral Castle?
Vanity Fair's royal correspondent Katie Nicholl told the BBC on September 12 that the British monarch wanted to die at her beloved home in Scotland, where she could "leave her crown at the gates and be a different role."
Katie said: "The Queen knew she wasn't going to come back [to Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace], I think she wanted to be in Balmoral and she wanted to pass there."
Royal Expert: Did The Queen Plan Her Death On Balmoral?
The author added that it was deeply moving to see how the Queen's coffin left Balmoral on 9/11, since it was the place where she "enjoyed holidays as a little girl."

Katie explained: "I think Balmoral was the one place where she could actually leave her crown at the gates and be a different role, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. 'I actually think there's a bit of her that knew she wasn't going to come back, I think she wanted to be in Balmoral and she wanted to pass there. And the fact that she did peacefully is actually a blessing in all of this."
Balmoral was also one of the favorite places of Queen Elizabeth II's late husband, Prince Philip († 99), who died in April 2021 just weeks before his 100th birthday. It was one of only two royal residences owned personally by the Monarch, along with Sandringham in Norfolk.
