The show, titled Diana, was scheduled to open on Broadway on March 31 of this year, but the date was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it's been announced that the production will perform before cameras in an empty theatre for a Netflix premiere. The filmed show will arrive on the streamer in early 2021 before Diana has its live opening in May.

Delayed Princess Diana musical coming to Netflix

Diana had begun previews in New York City in mid-March 2020 before postponing its March 31 opening day. The show will now take on an unconventional Netflix premiere, before also returning to a live theatre opening on May 25, 2021.

"We speak for the entire company when we say that we couldn't be more excited to finally be able to share our show with theater lovers everywhere," the show's producers said in a statement. "Though there is no substitute for the live theater, we are honored to be a part of the quality entertainment that Netflix provides its subscribers worldwide."

The release stated that safety is the priority for the Netflix film production, but that a plan has been approved. "Now comes the hard part – taking a safety plan from the page and putting it into practice," the statement continued. "The work to provide the safest workplace possible in this environment will require everyone to work together, from the employer to every employee."

Diana musical gets 2021 Broadway and Netflix opening

The Diana musical was announced in the summer of 2019, with the since-postponed March 2020 opening in place from the outset. In the show, Jeanna De Waal portrays the late princess while Roe Hartrampf plays Prince Charles. Diana covers a timeline of the royal couple's marriage and divorce.

Deadline reports that Diana's Netflix film shoot would likely make it the first production to return to the stage since the pandemic shutdown. With a May 2021 live opening, look for Diana to arrive on Netflix sometime earlier in 2021.

In June, Kristen Stewart was also confirmed as the lead in an upcoming film about the life of Princess Diana, titled Spencer.
