Demi Lovato has released a brand-new music video for her latest song "Commander In Chief"! As Entertainment Tonight shares, Lovato shared the video on Wednesday, and its visuals certainly match the song's powerful message!
Lovato gets political with her lyrics for the first time
Lovato surprised her fans by releasing the political power ballad "Commander In Chief" on Tuesday. The new track sees her singing about how she wishes the current presidential administration would do more to help those who are suffering in the wake of everything that's happened this year, with lyrics such as "We won’t give up, stand our ground/ We’ll be in the streets while you’re bunkering down."
As Entertainment Tonight mentions, the song was written by Lovato in collaboration with several other artists— including Julia Michaels, Eren Cannata, and Justin Tranter— and produced by Finneas. The video for "Commander In Chief" is simple yet poignant, featuring people of all different ages and ethnicities singing the song while they stand in front of a black screen. Lovato joins in herself at the end, visibly emotional as she sings while lights shine behind her.
Lovato debuted her new song at Billboard Music Awards
Lovato performed "Commander In Chief" for the first time prior to the release of its music video on Wednesday during the 2020 Billboard Music Awards. Wearing a bright blue outfit, she passionately sang the song while playing piano, joined by a choir of backup singers. During her performance, the word "VOTE" also appeared on a screen, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming U.S. Presidential election.
As Entertainment Tonight shares, Lovato also addressed criticism she received from some of her fans about the song through an Instagram story post on Wednesday. "I literally don't care if this ruins my career. This isn't about that. My career isn't about that," she said. "I made a piece of art that stands for something I believe in. And I'm putting it out even at the risk of losing fans." She also referenced the fact that she's "a queer Hispanic woman," and won't silence her own personal views.
"Music is Art, Art is expression meant to create conversation. We are heading into the most important election of our lives," Lovato later went on to explain in another post on her Instagram story. "This song isn't about division. This is about finding answers from our sitting President. So please, debate, and talk about voting. That's what this is all about."
