Tony Bennett is calling it a career at age 95.
The living legend performed his final show this week in New York City. Sadly, the decision to retire came "by doctor's orders," Bennett's son told Variety. Bennett had continued with live shows despite an Alzheimer's diagnosis in 2016.
Tony Bennett retires at age 95 after show with Lady Gaga
On Thursday, Bennett joined Lady Gaga for a final show at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Afterward, his son Danny explained why his father is stepping back from live shows:
"The decision is being made that doing concerts now is just too much for him," he told Variety. "We don't want him to fall on stage, for instance — something as simple as that."
He added that it was "a hard decision" because Tony is still "a capable performer." But Bennett's fall and winter dates are now cancelled, and he appears to have taken his final bow.
It's sad that the legend will retreat from performing due to his health, but there is certainly no question that he can still sing.
Just last week, Bennett and Lady Gaga released a new music video performing "I Get a Kick Out of You" — and he still sound great!
Born in 1926, Bennett just celebrated his 95th birthday on Aug. 3. The singer, who is also a WWII veteran, enjoyed one of the great careers as a pop, jazz, and show tune performer.
Enjoy retirement, Tony!
