Before he became a prominent actor, Lance Gross was born in Oakland, California on July 8, 1961. He eventually would attend Howard University to receive his Bachelor of Arts in theater. Even with this, he actually appeared in the music videos of Mary J. Blige, Rihanna and Mariah Carey before he would land his first acting role on screen!

In 2006, he appeared in minor parts of Eve and The Bernie Mac Show before being discovered by Tyler Perry. By 2007, he was cast as "Calvin Payne", the son of the "Curtis" and "Ella" on Tyler Perry's House of Payne.
His role in the series led to him winning four NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series!
The show concluded in 2012, followed by a spin-off series, Tyler Perry’s The Paynes. However, Tyler Perry had just announced this February 2020 that the original series will be picked up again and premiere on BET this summer!

Aside from Tyler Perry's House of Payne, Lance Gross also has a main role in the 2020 crime-thriller film Dutch, which is based on the Teri Woods novel of the same name.
