Many celebrities have been getting political ahead of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. But a fascinating new study has put names and numbers to the stars who have been most influential and whose voices fans trust the most.

Study names influential and trusted celebrities on politics

As election day looms, stars have been picking sides between U.S. President Donald Trump's re-election campaign and his challenger, Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate. But, according to a study by Whitman Insight Strategies and MRC Data, certain stars have had more influence than others ahead of the 2020 election.

The study of over 1,100 likely voters said that 12% of people had their political views influenced by a celebrity or athlete. According to THR (a partner of the study's data firm), the Top 5 stars in terms of raising-awareness on voting were:

  1. LeBron James - 36%
  2. Taylor Swift  - 13%
  3. Dwayne Johnson - 9%
  4. Oprah Winfrey - 6%
  5. Tie: Cardi B, Colin Kaepernick, Beyoncé - 5%

As for the most trusted stars on social and political topics, similar names topped the list, but with a new frontrunner. These percentages appear to report whether the given star was trusted or not:

  1. Tom Hanks - 49%
  2. Dwayne Johson - 45%
  3. Oprah Winfrey - 38%
  4. LeBron James - 32%

The study adds that, of Republican-identifying voters, Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, and Tom Hanks were named the most trusted voices. But the two Trump-supporting musicians didn't chart as high overall. Other notable revelations included:

  • Zendaya was most trusted among Gen Z voters
  • LeBron James was most trusted among Black voters
  • Lady Gaga was most trusted among LGBTQ+ voters
  • Kanye West was 5th-most influential among Gen Z voters

Celebrities speak out ahead of Nov. 3 election day 2020

Expectedly, most of the stars mentioned in the study have been vocal on politics in the weeks and months leading up to election day. Most have encouraged early voting, and the majority have endorsed and/or worked on fundraising for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

Swift and Johnson have been especially active in using their massive online followings to encourage voting. Other stars to similarly make political waves in recent weeks include Jennifer Aniston, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Selena Gomez — you can view their messages by clicking their names.
