Probably his best-known role is that of "Professor X" in Marvel films, and he also had a large fan base as "Picard" in 'Star Trek'. But it was his work on the theatre stage, especially his portrayals in Shakespeare's works, that brought him an unexpected honour.
In 2001, Stewart was appointed to the Order of the British Empire and was eventually knighted in 2010. "For services to drama" it said when announcing his knighthood, which the actor received in person at Buckingham Palace.
At the time, Queen Elizabeth II gave him the honour of a knighthood with a sword. According to the BBC, the actor said that he always looked up to the theatre legends who were knighted.
"To find myself now, to my amazement, in this company is the greatest honour I have received in my professional career," he expressed at the time.
