The rumoured divorce of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West could get nasty. As Page Six has reported, Kardashian is already preparing for an intense legal battle and recently hired the centrepiece of her team: attorney Laura Wasser, known in Hollywood as "the Disso Queen." Here's everything to know about the fearsome attorney.
Kim Kardashian's attorney in divorce from Kanye West
Educated at the University of California, Berkley, and part of the state bar since 1994, Laura Wasser has become known in recent decades for representing celebrities in high-profile divorce settlements.
Wasser's best-known clients have included Angelina Jolie in her lengthy separation from Brad Pitt, Maria Shriver in her controversial divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Melanie Griffith from Antonio Banderas, Demi Moore from Ashton Kutcher, and Robyn Moore from Mel Gibson—the last of which has been called the "most expensive divorce in history."
Britney Spears, Kiefer Sutherland, Christina Aguilera, Heidi Klum, Patricia Arquette, Stevie Wonder, Kelly Clarkson, Dr. Dre, and Hilary Duff were also represented by Wasser in their respective divorces. It's also not the first time Kardashian will have worked with the lawyer, as she did so when she divorced Kris Humphries in 2013.
Laura Wasser: The inspiration behind Marriage Story attorney
Wasser has made her presence felt in the entertainment world, given her portfolio of clients, but the lawyer has also left her mark in the world of cinema.
In addition to serving as a consultant for the comedy Liar Liar, Wasser was the inspiration for director Noah Baumbach and actress Laura Dern's creation of lawyer "Nora Fanshaw" in 2019 film Marriage Story.
Baumbach first met Wasser when she represented his ex-partner, actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, during their divorce. The filmmaker claims not to have had in mind the legal specialist when writing the character, but Dern admitted to having been inspired by the lawyer for her big-screen part.
"She's one of the great powerhouses," Dern told The Hollywood Reporter. "Despite empathy and heartfelt intent—and I think Laura is an example of this—the business of divorce is the business of winning for your team."
Dern, who was also represented by Wasser in her split from Ben Harper in 2013, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her work on the Netflix film in 2020.
As of now, Kim and Kanye haven't officially filed for divorce, but reports say it's an all-but-guaranteed outcome, and Kardashian is expected to have Wasser on her side.
