After starting his career as a sub pianist in the 1960s, Sir Elton John would make his debut in 1969 with his first single "I've Been Loving You". He released his second album in 1970 that would mark the start of a successful worldwide career, with hit songs like "Border Song" and "Your Song" topping the charts in both the UK and US!

While producing and performing hit 1972 single "Rocket Man" and 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Sir Elton also kept busy with his other hobby, football! Since he was a young boy, he had always supported the local Waterford Football club and even became the club's chairman and director in 1976!

The 1990s would bring even more success for Sir Elton John and would lead to his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994! Along with Tim Rice, he would also help to write a majority of the soundtrack for Disney's The Lion King. Many of his songs were nominated for Academy Awards, including the winner for Best Original Song, "Can You Feel the Love Tonight"!

Along with success, the 1990s were also filled with the loss of two of Elton John's closest friends, Gianni Versace and Diana, The Princess of Wales. Sir Elton John would be invited to perform at Diana's funeral at Westminster Abbey in 1997, and it is the only time he has ever performed "Candle in the Wind" live! The song went on to become the best selling single in Billboard history and Elton would donate the proceeds to Princess Diana's charities!

While Elton was receiving critical acclaim for his work, he was also making history with his personal life. In 2005, Elton and his longtime partner, David Furnish, were one of the first couples to enter into a civil partnership in the UK after the Civil Partnership Act was passed. They would later marry in 2014, when gay marriage was made legal in the UK. The couple have had two sons via a surrogate, 9-year-old Zachary and 7-year-old Elijah.

Sir Elton John would make another appearance at a royal event in 2012 for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert! Songs he performed for the Queen included "Your Song", "Crocodile Rock" and "I'm Still Standing".
