10 Famous People Who Died By Drowning

Naya Rivera – The 'Glee' star went missing on July 8, 2020 after taking her son boating on California's Lake Piru. The boy was found alone on the boat later that day, but Rivera was missing for five days. Rivera and her son are believed to have been swept away by a current, and although she managed to save her son, she did not have the strength to save herself.

Dolores O'Riordan – The Cranberries' lead singer, Dolores O'Riordan, was found dead in a London hotel room in January 2018. At the age of 46, she drowned in her bathtub due to excessive alcohol consumption and also discovered that she had taken prescription drugs.

Mary Mara (L) - The actress was found dead in the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York on June 26, 2022. She is believed to have drowned while swimming. Mara was best known for playing the role of "Loretta Sweet" on 'ER' and appeared on shows like 'Law & Order' and 'Dexter'.

Jeff Buckley – The musician known for his rendition of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' died in a freak accident in 1997 at the age of 30. Reportedly, Buckley spontaneously decided to go into the Mississippi River, to swim. A friend was watching him, but when he looked away for a minute, Buckley disappeared. It is believed that a large boat passed close to him and that the wake dragged him away. His body was found miles down the river six days later.

Brian Jones – The original leader of the Rolling Stones and an even wilder rock star than Keith Richards or Mick Jagger, he was fired from the band due to his drug addiction in 1969. Three weeks later, at the age of 27, he was found dead in his own pool. His death was ruled an "accidental death" as he had high levels of drugs and alcohol in his system. Although there are theories that suggest that Jones committed suicide after being fired from the band.

Eric Fleming- The actor was at the start of filming a production in Peru when he and his co-star Nico Minardos were in a canoe that capsized in the Huallaga River. Minardos managed to swim to safety, but Fleming was swept away and drowned on September 28, 1966, at age 41, leaving his fiancée Lynne Garber behind.

Carol Wayne – a TV and film actress who frequently appeared on 'The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,' died suddenly at age 42 under suspicious circumstances. Wayne was vacationing on a beach in Mexico with her boyfriend Edward Durston when she disappeared after an argument. Her body was found in the water three days later. Although it was ruled an accidental drowning death, many other theories arose.

Dennis Wilson - Dennis Wilson, a founding member of the Beach Boys, passed away prematurely in 1983 from drug and alcohol problems. During a party on a boat, he decided to dive into the river to retrieve lost items, including a silver frame with a photo from his previous wedding. Tragically, after one last dive, he never surfaced and his body was found 30 minutes later.

Natalie Wood – The actress died under mysterious circumstances while on vacation on a yacht in 1981. Although her death was initially concluded to be accidental, theories arose in later years that her husband may have been involved and in 2018 he was named as a person of interest in the reopened investigation into her death.

Whitney Houston – She was one of the most talented singers of her generation. Her struggle with drug addiction affected his career over the years and eventually led to her accidental death. Houston drowned in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub on February 11, 2012. An autopsy determined that cocaine and heart disease contributed to her death as well.
