The British pop group is made up of Melanie Brown a.k.a. "Mel B/Scary Spice," Melanie Chisholm a.k.a. "Mel C/Sporty Spice," Emma Bunton a.k.a. "Baby Spice," Ginger Halliwell a.k.a. "Ginger Spice," and "Victoria Beckham a.k.a. "Posh Spice."
After signing with Virgin Records, The Spice Girls released their debut single "Wannabe" in 1996, which ended up reaching the top position on the music charts in 37 countries, becoming a worldwide hit. Their debut album, Spice, which featured the song, sold a total of 23 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling album ever by a girl group. In this album also songs like "Say You'll Be There", "2 Become 1", "Who Do You Think You Are" or "Mama" were included. Such material was followed by the album Spiceworld, which sold more than 13 million copies worldwide. In total, Spice Girls has sold over 100 million records and has won five BRIT Awards, three American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards and three MTV Europe Music Awards. Thanks to their musical and commercial success, the band ended up becoming an icon of pop culture in the 90s, to the extent of being considered by specialized critics as the most recognized group of people in the United Kingdom since The Beatles.
After making a comeback in 2007 and 2008, the band became the center of attention during the 2012 London Olympics by participating in their closing ceremony. Spice Girls made an appearance at the ceremony to perform their songs Wannabe and Spice Up Your Life, turning this performance into an event of worldwide attention. Thanks to her, the songs and albums of Spice Girls returned to enter the charts of sales and downloads worldwide. In addition, his appearance became the most talked about on Twitter, surpassing even the conversations around the Olympics itself. After such a meeting, Spice Girls went on a tour in 2019 without the presence of Victoria, which was attended by around 700 thousand spectators and raised more than 78 million dollars in ticket sales.
