Welling started out as a model in the late 1990s and then transitioned into acting quickly. He had a recurring role in the CBS legal drama Judging Amy before catching his big break with his first lead role.

While he was still starring in Smallville, Welling also appeared in different feature films, like Cheaper by the Dozen (2003), The Fog (2005) and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2005). He actually also sat in the directing chair for a handful of Smallville episodes, including the series finale. His producing credits include the ninth season of Smallville and a couple of CW made for TV movies.

Welling got married to his first wife Jamie White in 2002, but the couple eventually divorced in 2015. In 2014, Welling started dating actress and equestrian Jessica Rose Lee. Their son was born in January 2019 and they were married later that year.
