One of the most notorious rock concerts in the US took place at Altamont Speedway, also known as Woodstock West. The Rolling Stones planned a free concert in San Francisco in 1969 to prove the band wasn't just going to play for high ticket prices.

On December 6, 1969, more than 300,000 people flocked to Northern California to see the concert. The Rolling Stones and their production team unwisely decided that the Hells Angels should make sure everything went smoothly. But things turned out differently. The concert ended tragically with a murder. 18-year-old Meredith Hunter, who was under the influence of drugs, pulled out a gun and pointed it at Mick Jagger. One of the Hells Angels then stabbed the young man, who later died in hospital. This act was filmed by three camera crews and is also part of the documentary film 'Gimme Shelter'.

The Band "The Who"

The band The Who was struck by tragic events. In 1978, band member Keith Moon died, and a year later another tragedy struck. During a sold-out show in front of 18,000 people in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1979, only 25 police officers were deployed to keep order. Although the concert was supposed to start at 8 p.m., the doors stayed closed 15 minutes beforehand because the band was still warming up. However, many people thought that the concert had already started and...

... they wouldn't let them in. So they stormed the doors and a deadly scrum ensued in which 11 people died and 26 others were seriously injured.

There is nothing worse than disappointed fans. Guns N' Roses and Metallica found out the hard way when they toured together in 1992. Of a total of 26 planned performances, eight took place in Montreal, Canada. However, one concert ended in disaster. Metallica's James Hetfield was injured during the pyrotechnics and the band had to cancel their performance.

Guns N' Roses decided to take the stage much later than planned, ostensibly to wait for an ailing Axl Rose. When the band finally showed up, they cut the concert short because of Axl Rose's sore throat. That was the spark that started the chaos. Around 2,000 fans rioted and looted the streets and set cars on fire. The damage incurred amounted to half a million dollars.

David Cassidy rose to prominence in the 1970s for his role in the hit TV series 'The Partridge Family'. He later ventured into a successful solo career and became one of the most popular teenage idols. Young women in particular fell in love when he came on stage. At a London venue, which sold out with 35,000 fans, some fans fainted and were trampled by other fans before they could be pulled from the crowd. Hundreds of other visitors were injured. A 14-year-old girl was in a coma for a week before dying. It was the first fatality ever at a pop concert.

Love parade in Duisburg

The history of the Love Parade is a sad chapter in German festival history. The event, which was once a symbol of techno culture and freedom on the streets of Berlin, has become a victim of its own fame through its own successes. The city of Berlin had had enough of the growing complaints and increasing garbage, which ultimately led to the Love Parade moving to Duisburg.

Organizers were optimistic, believing that one free facility would be enough to accommodate the crowds. But the disaster took its course as the crowd in the tunnel leading to the facility grew ever denser. The heat and crowds eventually led to a stampede that left more than 500 injured and 21 dead. The tragedy has shown that even the largest and most successful events can fail if their organizers do not adequately respond to their challenges.
