• Selena Gomez is in trouble again
  • Fans are giving her grief for THIS comment
  • She is now taking a social media break

Selena Gomez, the 31-year-old pop sensation and star of 'Only Murders in the Building', has finally broken her silence on the escalating violence in the Middle East. However, her neutral stance has sparked a wave of backlash on social media. This is not an issue where neutrals are welcome, it seems.

Gomez took to her Instagram stories on Monday night, expressing her concern over the "violence and terror" currently plaguing the world. "People being tortured or killed or any act of hate towards any one group is horrific," she wrote, calling for the protection of all people, especially children.

Selena is hurt by all the hate

However, her words have not resonated well with her massive fanbase. Critics on X, formerly known as Twitter, have accused Gomez of taking a "neutral" stance and being selectively outspoken. With over 430 million followers on Instagram, many believe that her posts can indeed change the world.

The pop star has a complicated relationship with social media. Last year, she revealed on 'Good Morning America' that she took a four-and-a-half-year break from the internet to preserve her mental health. Despite this, she has remained active on some platforms, especially TikTok.

"I’m sorry if my words will never be enough for everyone or a hashtag," she continued. "I just can’t stand by innocent people getting hurt. That’s what makes me sick. I wish I could change the world. But a post won’t." She signs the post "Love, Selena."

She also posted a photo of her younger sister, Gracie Elliott Teefey, writing "Having a sister, everyday has made me tragically sick. I would do anything for children and innocent lives." Gomez, who has been open about her own mental health struggles, recently hosted her inaugural Rare Impact Fund Benefit, an initiative aimed at expanding access to mental health services and education for young people worldwide.

"I struggled with the world inside my head for a long time and I felt lost and I felt hopeless at times," Gomez told the audience. Many can relate, as the world does seem to have taken a turn for the worse in recent times. But pop stars and their opinions are usually scrutinized quite a bit, given that they are rich and famous, after all.

Even so, perhaps it's best to be non-political if you're a celebrity. But these days, who knows?

Also interesting:

This isn't the first time Gomez has faced backlash for her social media posts. She was previously criticized for reducing the Black Lives Matter movement to a hashtag. Now, her statement about the Middle East violence has stirred a similar controversy.

Given the overwhelmingly negative response to Gomez’s statement, it seems like her social media break is well-advised. As the world waits for her next move, one thing is clear: the power of social media in influencing public opinion cannot be underestimated.

Her words about the violence in the Middle East are generating a similar amount of backlash on X, formerly known as Twitter, with pro-Palestine users being selectively outspoken. Others pointed out her claim that a post won’t "change the world," considering the size of her platform.

Have we reached a point where entertainment figures and politicians are on the same playing field? There was a time where celebrity opinions where taken with a grain of salt. Now, they mean everything!

Let's wait and see what, if any, her response to this backlash will be...
