The movie is a narrative exploring Trump's rise to power. Amidst the glitz of the red carpet, Stan, alongside co-stars and the creative team, dives into the heart of controversy, freedom of speech, and the critical timing of the film's release. But he himself was not a big fand of it.

  • Sebastian Stan is defending his latest movie
  • 'The Apprentice' was heavily criticized by Donald Trump
  • THIS is Stan's response

The last fight before the election

Stan, who portrays Donald Trump in Ali Abbasi's new movie, was asked whether this film debuting so close to the U.S. election could sway voters: "He's been trying to censor this movie, and at the same time, he claims he acknowledges free speech. I can't think of anything more hypocritical."

At the heart of London, amidst the sparkle of the BFI London Film Festival, Sebastian Stan, known for his role as the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, dropped a bombshell that has everyone talking! The actor didn't hold back as he branded Donald Trump a "hypocrite" for attempting to censor 'The Apprentice,' a film that charts Trump's controversial rise to power under the tutelage of Roy Cohn.

"It's about him as a character. Forget the politics," Stan passionately told The Hollywood Reporter. His call to the audience? Dive deeper, question more, and trust your instincts about who deserves to lead.

In a world dominated by social media and spoon-fed opinions, Stan's words are a rallying cry for critical thinking and curiosity.

Not one to stay silent, Trump unleashed his fury on Truth Social, slamming 'The Apprentice'.

"A FAKE and CLASSLESS Movie written about me, called, The Apprentice (Do they even have the right to use that name without approval?), will hopefully “bomb.” It’s a cheap, defamatory and politically disgusting hatchet job, put out right before the 2024 Presidential Election, to try and hurt the Greatest Political Movement in the History of our Country," Trump wrote.

His post, dripping with disdain, dismissed the film. But the film's screenwriter, Gabriel Sherman, sees Trump's reaction as proof of the movie's impact, mirroring the attack-first lesson Trump himself learned from Roy Cohn.

Despite Trump's scathing critique, 'The Apprentice' received a hero's welcome at its Cannes Film Festival premiere, earning an 8-minute standing ovation. This juxtaposition of acclaim and controversy has only fueled the fire of public interest, with audiences eager to see the film that's caused such a stir.

When asked whether this film could sway voters, Stan told 'The Hollywood Reporter': "I don’t know, but what I do hope is that people, regardless of their opinion, are curious enough to try to dig deeper. Because I think we’re living in a world where it’s so easy to be handed an opinion everywhere you turn. And I know a lot of people love social media, and that’s where they go for information and for things. You’re being told what to think. You’re being told what to do."

"If you have any inkling of interest, go and really ask yourself: ‘Who is this man? Do you really know? Do you really trust this person to lead a country?’ He’s been trying to censor this movie, and at the same time, he claims that he acknowledges free speech … I can’t think of anything more hypocritical. So at the end of the day, it’s about him as a character. Forget the politics and just go in there and use your instinct and ask yourself: Do you trust this man? That’s what the movie is about."

Producers said part of the inspiration for this film was to show Trump as carrying on Cohn’s legacy, as sources who worked on the 2016 Trump campaign told him the businessman was just "using Roy’s lessons."

However, it's not all standing ovations and rave reviews. The film's opening weekend saw a modest $1.6 million across 1,700 U.S. theaters—a figure that has undoubtedly caught the attention of both supporters and detractors. Will Trump's call for a "bomb" at the box office sway potential viewers, or will curiosity and controversy drive crowds to theaters?
