Sarah Hyland's Journey from Survivor to Advocate

Sarah Hyland, widely recognized for her role in 'Modern Family,' is using her personal experiences to support others who have faced domestic violence. By sharing her story, she aims to raise awareness and provide solace to those who feel isolated in their struggles.

Hyland has candidly spoken about the enduring effects of her past abusive relationship, emphasizing how memories can linger in what she describes as "that abused place of your soul."

In a recent interview with 'Variety', Sarah Hyland revealed the challenges of confronting her past. "It’s almost like you don’t wanna talk about it anymore," she said.

"You want it to be done, and that’s that. I completely understand the dissociation pattern of it." These words reflect a common experience among survivors, who often grapple with the desire to move on while being unexpectedly reminded of their trauma.

Hyland, now 33, acknowledges feeling "very much guilty" for trying to suppress these memories until something triggers their resurgence. She explains, "I didn’t realize that part of myself had been healed," highlighting the complex journey of healing from such profound experiences.

The Indelible Scars of Abuse

Despite her current happiness—she has been married to Wells Adams since 2022—Hyland admits that some wounds may never fully heal. "I don’t know if that part [of] any woman will ever be fully healed from that," she noted, acknowledging the deep and lasting impact of abuse. Her openness sheds light on the reality that many survivors face: the scars of abuse can linger long after the relationship ends.

"For thousands of years now, we didn’t talk about it," she added. "I feel that if we talk about it more, more women—and men and just human beings in general in abusive relationships—will feel more comfortable to be able to talk about it with their loved ones instead of letting their abuser isolate them from everyone, which is the first thing that they do, so that you don’t have that community."

Hyland's decision to speak out is driven by a desire to help others who may feel alone in their experiences. By turning her pain into purpose, she hopes to encourage more conversations around domestic violence and support those who are struggling.

Now, co-star Julie Bowden is praising Sarah for her courage to help others in need.

"Without adversity, there can be no way to define one’s character and sense of self," Julie told 'Variety'. "Sarah’s path has forced her, from a very early age, to take on challenges—both physical and emotional. She has met each moment with determination, grace, and vulnerability."
