Sam Smith is being candid about their decision to openly identify as non-binary! Smith appeared on Apple Music's New Music Daily on Beats1 this Friday, sitting down with host Zane Lowe to promote their new single, "To Die For" from their upcoming album of the same name.
While they were there, they talked about their the decision to go by gender-neutral pronouns, and shared their hope for society to become more inclusive when it comes to language!

Smith on their gender-neutral pronouns: "everyone messes up"
Smith acknowledged it can be difficult for people to refer to them by the correct pronouns, because society's established such a gendered language. "What's hard is everyone changing their vocabulary," Smith said. "It takes time. Everyone messes up. I'm going to be misgendered to the day I die."

The singer shared with Zane Lowe why being open about their identity is worth it to them despite this struggle. While they said it's going to take "a long, long time"
"This is all about feeling safe, and it makes me feel happy and it makes me feel comfortable,” Smith revealed. "And if I get to live a life where I’m a little bit more comfortable and happy, then I think it’s worth it".
