Phil Collins (73) has faced significant health challenges in recent years. A serious neck injury has caused nerve damage, severely restricting his mobility.

Phil Collins' faces health struggles

In the new documentary 'Phil Collins: Drummer First,' the 73-year-old opens up about the toll years of drumming have taken on his health. "If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks then I will have a crack at it”," Collins admits in an interview for the documentary, which was filmed in 2022.

Over the past decade, Collins has experienced a notable decline in mobility. The neck injury he suffered resulted in significant nerve damage, leaving him reliant on a walking stick and sometimes even a wheelchair.

His son, Nic Collins, explains in the documentary that his father "I think he had a big surgery on his neck that stemmed from all those years playing drums and just bad posture and stuff."

Impact on Phil Collins' career

Despite these health challenges, Collins has not given up on his career. He performed at his last concert with Genesis at London’s O2 Arena in March 2022, despite having to sing while seated. "I've spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock," Collins says.

However, he has made it clear that he will retire if he can no longer perform at the level he once did.

Hope for the future

Despite the difficulties, Collins remains hopeful. There are reports suggesting that he may be working on new music, which has excited his fans. His last solo studio album, 'Testify,' was released in 2002, and fans have been eagerly awaiting new projects ever since.
