Nearly half a century after the iconic sprint up the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps, Sylvester Stallone, 77, returned to the scene of cinematic history to mark the city's first Rocky Day with a knockout speech that has fans buzzing! "Yo, Philly! You're the Real Champs!" Stallone's told his fans.
A trip down memory lane
The "Italian Stallion" himself, Sylvester Stallone, delivered a heartwarming message to the crowd gathered at the steps that made "Rocky Balboa" a household name. "You're the real-life Rockys," he declared, praising Philadelphians for embodying the spirit of the underdog boxer who punched his way into our hearts.
The city has been through a lot since the coronavirus pandemic, and it's in a state of decay. Stallone's visit was a reminder of the city's former glory days! The star reflected on his own scrappy beginnings, likening his journey to that of "Rocky."
"I was very ambitious because there was no plan B," Stallone admitted, sharing his connection with the city that embraced his dream. "Rocky was just a perfect storm," he added, acknowledging the film's uplifting impact during a time of political change.
And what about the iconic steps? Stallone reminisced about the legendary step-climbing scene, emphasizing the triumph of will and the importance of never throwing in the towel. "To me, when you get up there, you feel like you can be the champion of your dreams," he inspired the crowd, urging everyone to "Keep punching!"
The scene became one of the most inspirational things every put in a movie. "Rocky" inspired millions to be their best selves. And Stallone wants to carry on that legacy.
His words there, were meant to inspire all of those who have seen their city's prospects dwindle, but there is still hope. "But the real victory is never giving up and going the distance for yourself and your loved ones. Standing at the top, you are reminded that all things are possible. Keep punching," he repeated.
Over at the famous Rocky Statue, his friend and actor Chevy Chase joined him to mark the moment. Roughly 4 million people visit his statue every year.
"This statue situation, I never thought it would come to such fruition," Stallone laughed. He also celebrated the grand opening of the new Rocky Shop. It features the only official merchandise from the franchise, and it's now officially open for business. The shop is located at the base of the famous Philadelphia Museum of Art steps, and it's open five days a week.
