Robert Downey Sr. has died at the age of 85. The father of actor Robert Downey Jr. passed away on July 6 following a battle with Parkinson's disease.

Though his son brought mainstream fame to his name, Downey was in his own right a respected director of underground films, perhaps best known for his 1969 satire Putney Swope.
He was married three times and had two children, including Robert Jr., in his first marriage to Elsie Ann Ford. His son confirmed his father's death today on Instagram.
In tribute, Robert Jr. wrote: "RIP Bob D. Sr. 1936-2021…Last night, dad passed peacefully in his sleep after years of enduring the ravages of Parkinson's.
"He was a true maverick filmmaker, and remained remarkably optimistic throughout.. According to my stepmoms calculations, they were happily married for just over 2000 years."
Downey concluded his tribute with a note to his stepmother. "Rosemary Rogers-Downey, you are a saint, and our thoughts and prayers are with you."
