• Sergio  Brown is a former NFL player
  • He has been charged with murder
  • HERE are the details

Brown, 35, was arrested in San Diego while re-entering the US from Mexico, police in Maywood, Illinois, said. He is awaiting extradition to Maywood, a suburb of Chicago, to face the murder charge, police said. Mexican law enforcement officers have known Brown’s whereabouts since at least September 19, a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation told CNN, which was first to report Brown’s arrest.

The ex-defensive back was arrested in San Diego, Calif. on Tuesday after he re-entered the U.S. from Mexico, the Maywood Police Department in Illinois said in a statement. Both Sergio, 35, and his 73-year-old mother Myrtle Brown were reported missing in mid-September.

Police are piecing it all together

On Sept. 16, Myrtle’s body was found near a creek behind her home in Maywood, Ill., just outside Chicago. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said Myrtle died from "multiple injuries due to assault." Police characterized her death as a homicide.

Sergio could not be reached at the time. Authorities later issued an arrest warrant for Sergio in connection with the first-degree murder of his mother. CNN reported Sergio is currently awaiting extradition to Illinois to face the murder charge. CNN claimed law enforcement officers were aware of Sergio’s whereabouts since at least September 19.

He was deported from Mexico after his arrest warrant was issued. And these matters can always be tricky international affairs. The circumstances surrounding Sergio’s initial disappearance are still hazy. In the days following his mother’s death, someone who appeared to be Sergio posted a video to social media discussing the killing. The post’s location was tagged as Mexico. ESPN was also tagged in the post.

Sergio gave himself away

Under US interstate extradition laws, a hearing is required if a defendant does not waive extradition. A court would be required to provide the final sign-off before Brown is removed from California and taken to Illinois.

Before Sergio's arrest, his brother, Nick Brown, spoke out in a post on Facebook about his mother's death and Sergio's disappearance. "Mom, thank you for being strong, caring, diligent, fancy, funny, and for saving my art," he wrote in part. "I won’t let you down. My brother Sergio is still missing. If anyone knows where he is I want him to know that I love you and please come home."

The body of his mother, Myrtle Brown, 73, was found in a creek behind her Maywood home on September 16, Maywood police said. Relatives had alerted police they’d been unable to find or contact her or her son, police said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined she died from injuries related to an assault, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide, according to a spokesperson. Sergio Brown played defensive back for Notre Dame before signing with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He played seven seasons in the NFL as a member of the Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills.

And now it seems his legacy will end in shame!
