Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez, better known professionally as Martin Sheen, was born August 3, 1940 in Dayton, Ohio. The seventh of ten siblings, Sheen was raised strictly Catholic. The young Sheen developed a passion for acting early on, but his father disapproved of his dreams. Still desperate to pursue an acting career by his early twenties, a Catholic priest lent Sheen the money he would need to make the trip to NYC!

'The Subject Was Roses'

Inspired by the legendary James Dean, Martin Sheen was ready to put in the hard work it would take to become a well-known actor. Hoping to gain recognition, Sheen would form his own theatre company with other actors. His first big role would come in 1964 in the Broadway play The Subject Was Roses, which would go on to do so well that in 1968 Sheen was asked to star in the film of the same name! Nominated for his first Golden Globe, Sheen was on his way to becoming a top star!

'Badlands'

Following his big film debut, Martin Sheen would continue to add to his growing resume with guest appearances on popular TV series including Flipper (1967), Hawaii Five-O (1970), and Mod Squad (1970-71). After appearing in the highly controversial Emmy Award winning TV film That Certain Summer (1972), Sheen would go on to play one of his favorite roles of his career as an antisocial murderer in crime drama Badlands (1973).

'Apocalypse Now'

Director Francis Ford Coppola was so taken by Martin Sheen's performance in The Execution of Private Slovik that he just had to have him for his 1979 war film Apocalypse Now. Up there among Martin Sheen's favorite films to produce, Apocalypse Now would bring Sheen global recognition! While Sheen has since admitted he wasn't in the best shape when filming Apocalypse Now, even suffering a minor heart attack on set, his on-screen talent is undeniable!

'The West Wing'

One of our all time favorite Martin Sheen roles was that of "President Josiah Bartlet" in highly acclaimed political series The West Wing. Sheen would play the part from 1999 until the series ended in 2006 for a total of 140 episodes!

'The Way'

In 2002, Martin Sheen would create his own production company with his son Ramon Estevez, Estevez Sheen Productions. In 2010 the company would release one of their biggest productions starring both Martin, Martin's other son Emilio, and his daughter Renée. Received positively by critics the film would debut at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.

'Stella Days'

Drawing on his Catholic upbringing and taking on the role of priest "Daniel Barry" in 2011 Irish film Stella Days allowed Sheen to return to his mother's hometown of Borrisokane, Ireland. A smaller film, Stella Days received mixed reviews, but Martin Sheen's popularity still drew huge crowds to see the film!

Even in his later years Martin Sheen has continued to age like a fine wine! Most recently you can catch him starring in hit Netflix series Grace and Frankie as out of the closet lawyer "Robert Hanson". While Sheen has played many homosexual characters over the years and is a huge supporter of gay rights, he has been happily married to his wife of 59 years, Janet Templeton.
