Maya Rudolph was born July 27, 1972 in Gainsville, Florida. Of African-American and Jewish descent, Maya would grow up in LA under the influence of her musically inclined parents, singer Minnie Riperton and composer Richard Rudolph. After graduating from the University of California in 1995 with a degree in photography, Maya would land a gig as a backing singer for hit rock band The Rentals.

After five years of singing and playing keyboard for The Rentals, Maya would get her big acting break in 2000 when she joined the cast of Saturday Night Live. Singing and performing in comedy sketches for the show, Maya would stay with Saturday Night Live full-time until 2007, and has since made many guest appearances!

While filming for Saturday Night Live Maya would also make smaller appearances on TV series, including City of Angels and Chicago Hope, before making her big film debut in 2006 with musical comedy A Prairie Home Companion.
