Maura was a member of the cast of the TV series ER, playing "Dr. Abby Lockhart" from 1999 to 2009. Her first guest appearance on the show was in its sixth season, three months later "Dr. Abby Lockhart" became one of the show's main characters.

"Abby" had a difficult childhood and started out working as a nurse. After several years she continued her medical training and became a doctor. Difficult and disruptive patients were treated to a dose of her sarcasm, but she also exuded an air of gentleness and authority.

Her television career also continued to be a success and she had parts in countless TV series such as Rescue Me and The Good Wife. From 2014 to 2019 she had a lead role in the drama series The Affair, which she won a Golden Globe for in 2016. She also appeared in the American drama The Report (2019).

Maura was married to actor Billy Morrissette from 1993 until 2006. They did not have any children and Tierney doesn't seem to be very active on any social media platforms.
