Noel Blanc, the son of Mel Blanc, shared the story of how "Bugs Bunny" factored into his father's recovery from a car accident on a new episode of the podcast Twenty Thousand Hertz.
Mel Blanc, nicknamed the "Man of a Thousand Voices," is the actor behind many classic cartoon characters on shows including Looney Tunes, The Flintstones, and The Jetsons.

Some of Blanc's most famous voices are "Bugs Bunny," "Porky Pig," "Daffy Duck," "Tweetie," "Barney Rubble," and "Mr. Spacely."
But in 1961, the iconic performer was involved in a head-on traffic collision that left him in a coma and full-body cast.

How "Bugs Bunny" saved Mel Blanc's life
While in a coma, Mel was initially unresponsive to the efforts of doctors and Noel himself when they tried to find signs of life.
"I'd say Dad, can you hear me? No," Noel Blanc recalled. After two weeks, the doctors eventually tried to reach him through reference to his popular Looney Tunes series - which they'd been playing on the TV set in his hospital room.

"[The doctor] finally says, 'Bugs, can you hear me?'" Noel said.
Mel responded, "Yeah, what's up doc?" in character.
Blanc later continued his voice work while in a full-body cast. He died in 1989 at the age of 81. His tombstone reads "That's All Folks."
