On March 28, 2024, Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were last seen together in public. They were photographed having lunch at the Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen in Santa Fe. The picture was published by the 'Daily Mail' on their Instagram page.
Hackman, who used a cane, and Arakawa, whom he married in 1991, had lived in New Mexico since the 1980s. The rare public appearance was the first time the couple had been seen together in public for 21 years. Previously, the two were at the 2003 Golden Globes, where Hackman received the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
Retreat from the limelight
Gene Hackman retired from acting after his last film role in the comedy "Welcome to Mooseport" (2004). In an interview with Larry King in the same year, he declared that his career was probably over.
Hackman said about possible projects: "I don’t know. If I could do it in my own house, maybe, without them disturbing anything and just one or two people." He devoted himself to writing and publishing several novels, including 'Escape from Andersonville'. Hackman explained: "I like the loneliness of it, actually. It's similar in some ways to acting, but it's more private."
Hackman's impressive career
Gene Hackman began his career with a bang in 'Bonnie and Clyde' (1967) and quickly became one of Hollywood's best-known actors. He won two Oscars, including Best Actor in a Leading Role in 'French Connection' (1971) and Best Supporting Actor in 'Merciless' (1992). Despite his retirement, he remained connected to the industry by supporting documentaries such as 'The Unknown Flag Raiser of Iwo Jima' (2016) and 'We, The Marines' (2017) as a narrator.
