In the 2017 documentary 'Gaga: Five Foot Two,' the singer shared that her relationships tend to end whenever she achieves a career milestone. She explained that it's as though there is a change in her personality that leads to the dissolution of her love life.

Gaga dated on and off for five years with bartender and musician Lüc Carl, whom she met in New York in 2005, just as the singer was beginning to gain popularity. The couple resumed their romance briefly in July 2010, before breaking up again later that year. "I've never really loved anyone the way I loved him. Or the way I love him," she told Rolling Stone of Carl in 2009. "That relationship really shaped me. I resolved that if you can't have the man of your dreams, there are other ways of giving love. Gaga admitted that her relationship with Carl inspired much of her early music.

The singer dated fashion designer Matthew Dada Williams, who worked as creative director at her Haus of Gaga label from 2008 to 2010. "Dada is quite brilliant and we were crazy lovers, but I stopped it when we discovered what a strong creative connection we had. I didn’t want it just to be about careless love," she told The Evening Standard in 2010.

Gaga and Taylor Kinney first met on the set of her music video for 'Yoü and I' in 2011, in which Kinney played her partner. On January 20, 2021, the couple made a rare public appearance at the presidential inauguration of Joe Biden in Washington D.C.
